Saving in Nigeria: Then vs Now with Baobab’s Jollof+

Nigerians have always loved to save.

Long before banks and saving apps, we were already finding clever ways to save money.

Most of us grew up with Kolo boxes and containers, where we saved our N50 and N100. I could still remember the joy that came with breaking the box and seeing loads of cash.

For that moment, I felt like the richest man in Nigeria.

Today, though, saving is easier. I don’t need to break open a wooden box or ask a friend to help me keep my money, so I won’t waste it. There is no need to queue at banks to register for a savings account. I can save my money with my phone and in a few minutes.

We have always been people who save, but our reasons are changing.

Why We Save

School fees, house rent, feeding, transportation, and many more bills made saving more of a necessity.

Gone are the days when you save just for the sake of it. Now, our savings are what is saving us. And traditional banks weren’t cutting it! We needed better solutions that fully met our savings needs, and that is when savings apps came in.

They made the whole process easy and convenient. You could set up your savings account from the comfort of your house. Put as little as N500 in the account, automate your savings and have different savings plans depending on your needs. Bliss right?

But there was another problem. The economy wasn’t smiling. The prices of things were increasing every day. This meant N1000 saved today couldn’t buy the same things tomorrow. We still saved, but our money didn’t have the same value.

Then Jollof+ came in.

Born From a Promise

A product of Baobab Nigeria, Jollof+ wasn’t just created to join the wave of saving apps. It was born out of Baobab’s promise, helping Nigerians save the right way, even in the face of rising costs and shrinking incomes.

From the university student trying to put away N500 a week to the young professional saving for a first apartment or the market trader working toward December stock—saving on Jollof+ means having a financial partner that helps your hustle.

Baobab’s Jollof+ is simply the latest step in that journey. It’s not just another app; it is a reflection of who we are and how far we have come. A nod to the past and a bold step into the future.
